Description

The most primitive chordates are the tunicates, the larvae are of this style. His notochord is an internal skeleton primitive which gives rigidity to the animal, is located at the base of the neural tube. The tunicate larva resembles to tadpoles but his metamorphosis is a very different, as adults have no notochord and are sessile.

The agnatha are fish that have no jaws, in the past were very abundant but time passed many species have become extinct. Lampreys have a method to neutralize them predators, his smooth skin has glands that secrete mucus that is intense. Its internal structure also posse notochord that remains throughout life.

The gnathostomata are vertebrates that have jaws. The which is represented in this work is a chondrichthyes (shark) but drawn without his pectoral and dorsal fins to compare it with the lamprey, the most notable is his jaw.

There is a hypothesis about the appearance of the jaw, which occurs in the embryo. In some moment first gill arch is folded in two and transforms jaw and the rest is used to hold the gills. Also another variant of this hypothesis in which are involved more gill arches and the reduction of gill slits in sharks and reducing gill arcs of 7 to 5.

The muzzle of the lamprey has a hard tongue and has a structure with teeth used to cause injury to cling. Occurs vacuum in the suction (piston lingual) which clings to the dam. His mouth plates are analogous to the jaw. By suctioning produces wounds and shred and minor teeth apply greater fixation.

In chondrichthyans have a complexed respiratory system. They have long gill slits, the spiracle which serves to drink water, is big in sharks pelagic while in marine funds is small. The gill arches are not good for pumping water, so sharks have to swim to breathe.

The skin is the biggest external protection in the chondrichthyans, have placoid scales that originate in the dermis. The structure of these placoid scales is the same as in the teeth also can be large or small, having multiple spines and its disposition is dense.

I love that these are all combined into one page of illustrations~! I've seen bits and pieces here and there, mainly biology books, but I've never taken the time to put them together myself. Thank you for doing so, and very well done!! :D
